Dcafé is a traditional cup of coffee expresso, that may be stacked with the saucer, robust and suitable for professional use.
The form has been simplified to the maximum, emphasising its “D effect” – formed by the shape of the cup’s handle. The handle appears as a surprise element that is personalised and personalisable.
The cup may be produced in an annual series - with new collections launched every year.
Small limited series may also be produced with handles created manually by the children covered by this project.
The coffee cup may also be used in order to attract potential sponsors...
Trisomia 21 is a genetic defect created by the replication of the X chromosome, in whole or in part. This piece is intended to represent the elements that define our genetic code.

T-shirt Tie-dye printed with a heart shape, compound with palms of the hand of children with Trisomy-21 with a transverse palm crease (a single crease in the palm of the hand instead of two), characteristic of Down syndrome.

Plant roots broke through the bottom of the pot.
“The furniture seems to defy gravity, but the trick is to make an invisible setting to the wall. I wanted one to imagine that the drawer comes out of the headboard table. This way there is something different that shows us that the defect is not bad, but instead interesting and powerful.“

The table is formed through the connection between two interdependent elements, creating a strange, tender and fragile harmony.
In accordance with the premises of the “efeito D” project, the “Il va tomber” shelves incorporate a small defect that will make them fall and thereby gain specific characteristics. They serve as shelves only to be used for books and with a slight notion of chaos, expressive of a social state, because utilitarian objects may also be chaotic.
The Dolly chair reflects an extremely commonplace practice of constant changes - in other objects and the body itself. The sense of imperfection underlying the project leads to an appeal to action in a kind of “pro-tuning furniture”. It is expected to be difficult to resolve the problem because the chair will be an open work. A prototype chair at home, a bit like the chair owned by designers.

Collection of 3 low birch word tables. These sloping tables, when viewed from a certain angle, seem to be flat. (550 x 550 x 330 mm, 990 x 645 x 330 mm, 1200 x 490 x 330 mm)

Mirror, mirror...tell me if there’s anyone more “special” than me? “Mirror, mirror” reflects the world around us: people, places, images... its distinctive characteristic is its reflection / distortion of reality. Are we solely that which we (apparently) see?
Key words:
. Form vs. distortion*
. Reflection
. Glamour
*Distortion – is the act of distorting, deforming a meaning, image or sound, deviating, altering reality, or changing the interpretation of a fact.

Flash Drive USB – big, fat and heavy* - in teak. * This is the eternal, omnipresent difference. An object of affection.
Ideal for scheduling informal meetings and coffee breaks.

What would be perfection, if it weren’t for the accidents that so often dictate its trajectory? The Amiba set of tableware is an example of this trajectory. An original defect that produces something original. Strange, but more original in its form and richer in its function. Here, the defect reveals the distinctive character that brings the object closer to perfection.
Porcelain is the raw material that inspires the organic structure of the Medusa lamp. Deliberately strange to look at, it reveals its full beauty by means of the light cast by its asymmetric contours. A D effect (of) light, magic and above all, a search for the beauty hidden behind the obvious and normal.

A car-wash combined with ‘where have all the flowers gone’ (Marlene Dietrich) symbolizes the cleansing of the dirt of war. Dirt made by dictators such as Hitler in Germany or Pol Pot in the seventies in Cambodja and so many others, over and over and over again. These regimes created and controlled a uniform society with strict rules in which was no space for the development of art and cultures.
We have a tendency to live with our personal and local believes. We must learn from our collective memorie, be less ingnorant and arrogant. Let’s try to be more aware of the importance and beauty of the diversity of human kind. The video symbolizes our tendency to wash away our guilds and bad memories from the past.

A subtle transformation of an object can distort the normal perception we have of it. In this case, we work the back of a chair to create a small plane that coincides with the centre of gravity. The chair appears to float in a magical way. As if we had captured a moment. The chair is still functional, but an unusual position in this chair becomes an object of play.

Pill pizza is food design, an element with the basis of a traditional Pizza, and the ingredients in the shape of pills, introducing in this way more performance to ordinary Pizza.

A non limited edition of 200 packs of A4 officepaper sold in benefit for this cause. It contains 200 different paperqualities: different colours, thickness & quality. The concept is that´s nice to have different paper at hand instead of all the same.

My other vase project is based on handicraft process. I designed one vase which will change it´s substance after every other piece is produced. In standard production, certain amount of moulds is made to produce certain amount of a copies. Here the idea is to create one mold for this vase and cast the vase shape until the mold is destroyed by matter of time and overusing. But with every cast one molecule is added ( drilled it into a mold) by the act of buying this vase. So each buyer means one molecule, one part of the vase. This vase therefore changes and grows by human cause and will until the mould is destroyed by overusing. Every step , defect or unperfection is detected on the shape and is natural part of the process of production.
In porcelain and glass industry, 10 - 20 percent of products are being destroyed because of quality matter. Some exclusive brands destroy 70 percent of the production! Just perfect and best quality pieces survive to be sold on the market. We actually live in very selective design world. Imagine what would happen if we changed a product for a human being. How does the B –class, second quality product look like? Mainly it is just visual thing. One bubble in glass, one metal dot in porcelain causes the breakup of the piece.
My idea was to create special collection which would be based on these details. Instead of destroying the product with an imperfection, defect, I would like to save the piece and point at it. The idea is to create computer mouse pointer in the form of enamel, which will be fired or printed on the „unperfect“ pieces, pointing at the place of visual defect. By adding this mark I would like to add value to the object and point at this production and market „laws“. Symbolically, as an answer to the brief, I wanted to play with this special moment in production of design, where visual imperfection seems to be part of the process but is kind of hidden. It doesn´t harm real function of the piece, so why we shouldn´t just create this naturally special line?

For the last proposal we again used the Rhino chair. This time we did not use a hard material, but in stead we used a soft material.Maybe this is the most interesting one. We blew again the piece up. The result is a friendly, funny, sort of cuddling object which you can lie on, sit on or play with. Due to the process the function of the whole object shifted, although the main features of the original remain.
A mutation of one of my designs, the Zzzidt-object. There is growing some sort of mushroom out of it. This idea can be applied to other objects which are made with rotation moulding. This object should be seen as a way of thinking, not a final design. We heated the Zzzidt-object locally, and then blew it up. The result is some sort of mushroom or blob 'growing' out of the object, giving it more identity and personality.

Trisomy 21 is described as a slight genetic difference creating a problem. The challenge for this project was to imagine a design incorporating a difference which would be the quality of the object. "Pure Mess" uses only wood with knotholes. Usually knotholes are considered as inferior whereas here they create a pattern and therefore make the object unique.

Chitta is a stress relieving neck pillow. It is made of ceramics and the base cap is made of cork. Inspired from ancient African practice of using neck support. I wanted to design a neck support that help relieving stress in our contemporary society. It is a proven fact that if one takes a nap with a proper neck support lying on a floor, stress gets relived, the mind really lighter and fresh. These objects also can be used as a memory container, as it has a base- which also act as a cap for the pillow. To store small mpersonal messages. Chitta also means is the Subconscious mind. It is the store-house of memory.

Words have more than one meaning. Indeed, it is often the translation of the storyteller or audience which makes information interesting. News can also have more than one meaning. There are different sides to every story and the numerous people involved in communicating the facts can distort information to create new narratives.
Softnews, a project by Studio Makkink and Bey, is a different way of recording and delivering news. Based on the tradition of Portugal's Lenços de Namorados (Lover’s Handkerchiefs) and working with the Down Syndrome community, specially-designed Softnews handkerchiefs are sewn with the text and images of news reports sent from all over the world. These handkerchiefs are sold as unique translations of history, whereby the news finds a new meaning and destination.

My project for efeito D will be a t-shirt print in a limited edition. the main motive is the picture of the chromosome 21 and with it an text of explication. The important and special point is, that it will be printed in a screen printing technique in a specified succession. In the graphic presentation you will recognize how the printing process will take place For the printing process it is very important, that the colours will change more and more, within the succession and so each print will be unique.
1. From each size S-M-L there will be 21 t-shirts, so 3 series = 63 t-shirts
2. Each serie has 7 black, 7 grey, and 7 white shirts
3. Each series has seven colours (white, yellow, orange, red, lila, blue, black) with in these colours 3 t-shirts will be printed
4. The printing process will start with white colour on black shirt and will end with black colour on a white shirt.
5. In the process of printing the screen should not be cleaned, the mixing of the colours is very important = UNIQUE
6. Each shirt will be in a packing together with a diagram (printingsystem)
The whole project is based more on logical system than on aesthetical decision. So the description of the printing process is the abstract of my project for efeito D.
